Death on the water

In a story that led even the New York City newscasts, a 16-year-old girl from Greenwich High School was killed in what police are calling an accident in Old Greenwich near the town’s yacht club. WFSB Channel 3 reports two girls of four involved in the incident were on inner tubes and being towed behind a boat when the boat supposedly stopped short and Greenwich Police said the tow rope for the tubes got caught in a boat propeller.

News 12 reports town officials have identified the 16-year-old girl killed in a boating accident yesterday as Emily Fedorko.

Another teen was seriously injured and taken to Stamford hospital with what Channel 7 Eyewitness News called a “soft tissue” injury.  She is expected to recover. Two other females were on the boat, but police did not say if they were seriously injured in the crash. The vessel is privately owned and stationed in Greenwich. The accident took place at around two o’clock this afternoon.

The New York Daily News allegedly has identified the pilot of the boat as the father of one of the girls involved.

By the way the minimum age to drive a boat in Connecticut is 13.

Channel 7 also reports Greenwich Schools Superintendent William S. McKersie released a statement:

“This evening, we are mourning the devastating loss of one of our Greenwich High School students, a rising junior, who was involved in a boating accident today on the Long Island Sound. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time of tragedy. There are few words that can express the deep compassion we feel for the family of the young girl that has died and for the three other girls involved in the accident. The Greenwich Public School community is ready to support the girls involved and their families in every way possible.”

Social media has been talking about this incident since it happened.  On the Facebook page “You know you’re from Greenwich if…” Heather Cody Bray made a seemingly passionate plea about her son and comments made on other Facebook pages.

My son knew everyone on the boat. He’s shattered by this tragedy and devastated by the rude, ignorant comments that he’s reading elsewhere on FB. Thank you “You know your from Greenwich if” people for being such a caring, classy group of people. These families need our support, not the futile comments that will not change a thing. Thank you.
