Turkey toons

Time for the little kid in me to come out again as I present a cartoon festival.  The pickings for this festival won’t be like your normal Thanksgiving Feast, but let me give it a shot.

First it’s Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in Tom Turk and Daffy, a 1944, Leon Schlesinger Looney Tunes, directed by Chuck Jones written by “The Staff.”  In it Daffy meets up with a desperate Tom Turkey who wants to escape the knife and Porky’s gun, until something in the turkey day menu makes Daffy crack.

Another cartoon for you is Tex Avery’s 1945 Jerky Turkey.  The Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock and found a colony. A large number of Pilgrims (some of them caricatures of Avery’s crew) can be seen standing in line… for their cigarette rations (war propaganda though in 1945, WWII would end). A Pilgrim goes hunting for a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, a turkey who sounds like Jimmy Durante.

Lastly is The Mouse on the Mayflower, a 1968 animated Thanksgiving special from Rankin/Bass. It debuted on NBC on November 23rd of that year. It’s the story of  a mouse named Willum, who is discovered on the Mayflower. Tennessee Ernie Ford voices Willum and narrates, bless his pea picking heart.  This is a long lost special.

Hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving.
